Mike the driver: "You know there's always some asshole who says he's been to Moscow and this is nothing like it and I just want to tell him to shut the hell up I'm giving a tour"
Okay that didn't quite convey the humorous way Mike the driver told the story. Anyways, it was about 18 miles to the top on fire road in Mike the driver's van. We had plenty of time for stories. Get to the top, tip Mike the driver, and off we went down the mountain. The trail is actually a portion of the Colorado Trail and starts as twisting downhill singletrack from the get go. About a mile into the trek Tony alerts us that he lost his GPS. Oh no. So he hikes it all the way back up to where he last used it and by the grace of Pueblo Indians, he found it! It somehow landed in the ONLY 2 square foot area of low grass...
The profile was a short downhill followed by a long uphill then back down. The long uphill was really challenging and was done from about 8000 to 10,000ft and our lungs were burning. I kept thinking how I couldn't imagine those peeps who climb everest at like 30,000ft! Anyways, there were a bunch of other riders and at one point there were 12 of us doing the hike-a-bike up a long skinny trails on the edge of the mountain side. Kind of funny, cool and scary at the same time. Up at the top we got sideswiped by some bad weather and had to take shelter under a tree. Lots of lightning and thunder for about 20 minutes. Then finally on to the top where much to our surprise there were many dozen cattle hanging out and that we almost drove into on the trail. And to the downhill...FINALLY. Incredible. So fast. So techy. So oh my goodness. There really is nothing like flying down a trail with just the wind in your ears and completely zoned in to the trail and nothing else. Wonderful. Found another local establishment in downtown Durango for, what else, good food and beer. There is a theme here....
