9.6.09 Got a little Jack in you?

Slept in today. Heading out to Captain Jacks trail about 25 minutes west of Colorado Springs for a warm-up, lets get acclimated type of ride. The parking lot was huge but was empty so logically we decided to park right next to the highest rock face with the highly likelyhood of a massive falling rock crushing our rental van...

Had to wait about 30 minutes for a passing thunderstorm to roll by but got set and hit the trail. We climbed for about an hour stopping only to give incorrect directions to a very nice family for viewing a nearby waterfall. I do believe the father new the direction were wrong but in a diligent manner followed them to a T. He wore a fanny pack. We then proceeded to find said waterfall in quite the opposite direction he went. It was a small little fall but worth the slight detour down about 500 feet to view. The climb back up the trail on the road was full of sucking exhaust from the multitude of tourist vehicles flying by.

On to the trail. The terrain was much like the nearby Garden of the Gods; reddish soil of crushed stone densly packed on winding singletrack with areas of loose dry, more of a sand type base. Our first 'incident' of the trip occurred here when during a pleasant climb Mike's camera jettisons from his pocket and does a gymnastic tummy tuck sommersault with a triple saucau out of his shorts pocket. Chad and Mike stop short; silence only interupted by the soft curdle of disrupted stones as the $10.99 soft camera case heads for the base of the moutain. Luckily it stopped in a crevause about 50 yards down and Mike does his best 'Man vs Wild' to retrieve it. Trip to Best Buy avoided.

Finally we hit the downhill portion which was surprisingly amazing. The trail was multi-use and as a result there were high banking turns for the ATV motor bikes which we took full advantage of and long downhill portions of high speed. This, of course, points to the main advantage the trails out west have to those back east; elevation. These trails have the ability for long, like 2-3 hour down hills with continuous winding trails and multiple switchbacks that you can't get on a 150 ft high isololated hill. Packed the bikes up and headed out to dinner with Tom, Alethea and Zoey to the Golden Bee for some half yards of beer and good eats. Zoey threw approximately 46 crackers packets on the ground!
